Weekend of Enormous Fun

Gotta start off every blog post with a dead thing.  Here's this week's dead thing!  We think it was a baby gopher.  Luckily Maggie (one of the cats here) put it to rest.  I say "luckily" because this little bastard would have happily eaten its way through many of our potatoes had it been given the opportunity.  Rest in peace, baby goph.  Godspeed.

In more exciting news, what a fabulous weekend back in Portland this was!  One might even say it was “totally awesome”. During my wee break from country life I had the opportunity to absorb some culture and reconnect with my dear friends.

By "absorb culture" of course I mean "listen to rock and roll, watch movies and imbibe enormous tequila beverages".  It's hard to tell from the photo, but that drink was about the size of my head.  I assure you I had some help in consuming it, heh heh heh...  Friday night was spent hopping around from place to place with my girls Zoe and Rose.  We walked and biked all over inner SE and had a grand old time despite the rain.  Seriously though it was fuckin' freezing.  Damn you June-uary.

It was my great pleasure to spend some time with this great looking couple of humans this weekend.  Gill was in town visiting Michael and in the magnificent Saturday twilight we all went for a lovely walk around the Hawthorne/Belmont neighborhood and I got a free cup of coffee for being so damn adorable.  I even made them try the pea shoots that were growing in someone's garden.

Then Zoe came over to my apartment and we set off the see the new Wes Anderson masterpiece (I thought it was beautiful and wonderful).  Did I mention that all of a sudden I love seeing movies again?

Speaking of things I love, this weekend I felt a bit nostalgic about moving away from Portland.  P-Town has been my home for the last four years and I can confidently say I know it pretty darn well.  Granted, I am glad to be getting away while the post-grad dust settles, but surely I can envision moving back.

One of my favorite things about living on the edge of Ladd's addition are the alleyways that criss-cross throughout it and allow for new and interesting footpaths around the "hood".  The past few weekends that I've been back, I have spent Sunday morning making a 3-mile loop around this area, always incorporating fresh routes.

Other things I'll miss?  Being able to bike or run on the road or sidewalk without fear of being eaten alive by insanely vicious rural canines.  I had a terrifying experience with a neighbor's dog last week while I was out running.  Needless to say that's not an activity I'll be doing again in Gales Creek any time soon.

After the movie on Saturday night we the girls went to see our old friends Youthbitch (one word, no apologies) play at Slabtown.  They were headlining because apparently they have turned into quite the "buzz band" but they're still just a bunch of schnooks as far as I'm concerned (in the best possible way).  We got to play some air hockey which is way more fun than it should be and dance around to our good friends playing songs about ex-girlfriends and beer.

Today is Sunday and Gill and Mikey came to visit me up at the farm.  I bought us an enormous fresh-as-heck piece of Sockeye salmon caught in Copper Creek.  We marinated it in soy sauce and garlic and just gave it a flash fly.  Served up with some asparagus, garlic spears and a big fresh salad, it was quite the meal.  Now they left and it's just me and the plants and another week here on the farm to look forward to.  Tuesday we go to the spring's first Cannon Beach farmer's market, which I am totally excited for.  Until then, my friends. Goodnight!
