This year (I say that as if it's a deviation from the rest) Fourth of July had little to do with celebrating my country's awesomeness and more to do with biking around Portland in a goofy outfit with my friends. My Friends. Have I mentioned how dear they are to me? Each and every single one of them? When you live out in the country, not constantly surrounded by gossiping gaggles of college-aged folks, you start to miss them as I have. These particular folks are besonders (German for especially) special.

Early afternoon, Rose the Indie (is that still a word?) Goddess plays us her sweet banjo songs in garden at Zoe's house. |
After a brief "Sloshball" party at the Reed Rugby pitch, which amounted to a considerable dance party at certain moments, Renee and I biked to NE Portland to attend a barbecue, where we found Clémence. The party was in the home of our friends Lydia and Margaret, which is an absolute mansion. It's in a very ritzy neighborhood and damn, those girls know how to decorate a house.

Once some partying had been well taken care of, Holly swooped up me and Clé and off we went to the place pictured above. A dock on the Columbia river just across from Sauvie Island in N. Portland. There was a derelict boat that looked like it used to be a hotel or something, it had a sauna at one point! We drank beer and ate strawberries on this old dock with the company of a group of toothless Oregonian sturgeon fishermen and their deranged children. Luckily our new friends (who explained to me in detail the catching and butchering of a sturgeon) brought lots of fireworks!

That night the wonderful folks at Sidewalk's End Farm let me sleep at their beautiful house and I awoke in the morning to a glorious, sunny day. Immediately I went out and bought some lumber for the rabbit hutch I am intent on building and some groceries to make breakfast for my hosts. After a long breakfast and many cups of coffee enjoyed in the sunshine with my dear Clem, I headed off to the Reed Woodshop to build, build, build.

I also got to visit the lovely Miss Marie in her Bus Bus for some rabbit advice, ain't she a beaut?
